Driving In Japan
First Year JETs
You can drive legally in Japan, using an International Driver’s Permit for a maximum of 12 months after your entry into Japan. If you leave Japan for 3 consecutive months, the clock starts again.
International Driver’s Permits may be obtained from the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). To apply you will need to download the application form.
Second and Third Year JETs
Unless you have left Japan for over 3 months between your first and second year, you must have a Japanese Driver’s license in order to drive legally. The consequences of driving without a Japanese licence under these circumstances can be severe, up to and including:
- 1 year in jail
- deduction of 12 points off your licence
- 2 year licence suspension
- 300,000 yen fine ($2,900 CAD)
Converting to a Japanese Licence
In order to convert your Canadian license to a Japanese one, you must have had a valid Canadian driver’s licence for at least 3 months prior to leaving Canada. It is not necessary to take a written or road test to convert from a Canadian to a Japanese licence. All applicants must take an eye test in order to obtain a license.
What to bring:
- Original license (must show a date of issue of at least three months prior to arrival in Japan and an official translation. Official translations for most country licenses can be provided by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) for ¥3,000 plus ¥380 postage. If your license does not show a date of issue, or if the date of issue is less than 3 months prior to arrival in Japan due to license renewal, you must provide documentation and a translation showing the original date your license was issued. Pay particular attention to this if you plan on renewing your license within 3 months of your arrival in Japan.
- Alien Registration Card (gaikokujin torokushomeisho)
- Passport
- One photo (3cm × 2.4cm)
Once you convert to a Japanese license, your new license is automatically suspended for up to 2 years if you had even a minor traffic infringement, including parking tickets, while driving with an International Driver’s Permit. If you are planning to re-contract for a second or third year, therefore, you should begin the process of acquiring a Japanese Driver’s License as soon as your re-contract has been confirmed.
